The Italian region
of Molise is a relatively new region, only having
split from the Abruzzo region to its north in 1965,
its underdevelopment has preserved the inspiring
mountainous landscape. It possesses its own rugged
beauty. The Matese mountain range is still the haven
of wolves and various birds of prey.
It offers some excellent skiing resorts and tends
not to be as overcrowded as some of Italy's other
skiing areas. At present the centre of Matese is
at the base of the ski slopes.
There are five established hotels and a large number
of privately owned apartments. The local Italians
from Campobasso use this as a weekend retreat once
the snow comes.
There are shops offering good ski clothes and equipment
and a shopping area where you can purchase local
delicacies for taking home. The evening entertainment
facilities of the hotels are varied and open to
non-residents.
